Spring 2009 Class

Taking a look around and seeing how blogs work, what are some of your ideas about them and how they could be used in the classroom.
  • Is this a good tool and would it be useful to you?
  • Could you find ways to apply this resource to work with other teachers?
  • Would students have any trouble figuring out the technology or how to use it for various projects in and outside of the classroom?
  • Is it more work than it is worth?

I think that blogs such as Blogger can be a very easy way of sharing information to a class. They are very easy to set up and post news or articles to. They also allow users to easily post comments to them.

Some people may be a little afraid to use them at first, but they take little time to get used to and are very user friendly.

I know of several elementary teachers who use blogs for their classes as a way to keep parents informed on what is going on. They share class projects and post pictures of classroom activity.

I think that it could be used in high school and college classes much like the blackboard system we currently use.

One drawback to using a site like Blogger would be keeping all your accounts straight if you had several different classes using blogger.

I have never really used blogs before now. For the most part it seems simple enough. I could see how this could be useful in schools. As long as the student, teacher, or parent knows how to get to the blog I don't see any issue with using it.

The only thing is that if people are commenting make sure that they know not to put confidential information on there since others can see the comments.

I think that blogs are a very useful tool, but personally since I live in a small town with few financial resources I can't be sure that all students and their parents have access to the Internet to read the blogs. If I were to post class information and assignments in a blog I couldn't be sure that everyone would get it.

Blogs would be a great resource to work with other teachers to share information and ideas. I would even be able to blog with other teachers around the country.

I don't think that students would have any trouble figuring out the technology or how to use it for various projects in and outside of the classroom if this were one of the ways I chose to share information. The students I know are very tech savvy. This generation seems to be hardwired for it.

If the information and ideas I am sharing through blogs are useful, then it is not more work than it is worth. It would be a great way to learn from others' ideas and grow as a teacher.

I don't think blogs are a useful tool for me. I don't know much about blogs. All of a sudden we are using blogs for our discussion. I suppose I could find ways to work with other teachers but I don't know why I would want to. Students would not have any trouble figuring out the technology. I think they could find lots of ways to use blogs for their projects. I just don't think blogs are worth it for me. I prefer discussion board.

I really believe that blogs such as blogger is a great tool for a lot of people including myself to keep in touch with colleagues, teachers and classmates. If we do not use them we cannot keep up with everyone that we know.

I believe this is a great tool for all classrooms to use and it is very useful to me. In the schools I work in blogs are used all the time between the staff. Blogs are used at the elementary level, middle and high school level not only by teachers but also by students.

Students today are so much more advanced in the technology world then many of our parents and grandparents they are using technology daily not only at school but a lot of the use of technology comes from their homes.

I think you can use blogs with just about any level of education it will be a little harder for elementary students to comprehend but I still think they can learn it.

Is it more work then it is worth? No I think if you put the time and energy into anything it is worth it.

First of all I have never used a blog before. I think it could be a good tool. I personally don't care that much for them. Maybe because I haven't gotten use to them. I think it could work as a resource with other teachers if they could find a way to incorporate it into their lesson plan. I think that students today will not have any problems setting up a blog. The students now are very swift with technology. Most of the students work on computers everyday whether in school or at home. Personally I think that blogs are more work than it is worth.

The blog, as a medium for passing along content, and keeping students, parents, and other teachers informed, is pretty effective.

A good idea for using a blog is carrying on a discussion with all students who are taking a particular class. This way instead of a conversation with 20 kids in 3rd hour American History class, you get ideas from all 80 students in all your American History classes.

Students won't have any more trouble using or interacting with a blog than any other computer based learning tool. Any tool that helps a student understand your lesson is worth the effort.

Blogs are a very useful tool to share information. You can control who sees and writes to your blog and you can delete comments you don't like. They are easy to set up. A blog would be a useful tool to me to get information out there I want others to know.

As long as other teachers have access to the internet, I could find ways to use this resource to work with other teachers.

I don't think students would have a hard time figuring out how to use a blog, as long as they can read and write or they would need help from an adult or older child. It is pretty much straight forward and children in this day and age know probably more than me about how to use different technologies.

Anything that gets the information out and helps students learn new things is definately worth the time.

I have not really ever been a blogger. I just recently have started using one for a class I am taking. I think they are ok. There are a few things I don't like about them. One is that I have to copy what I type before I try to submit it because, my information regularly gets lost and I have to try to submit it multiple times before it actually will stay. Another thing I don't like is that you have to only go down and can not put your comments regarding someone else next to them, you have to just go to the end. That is one thing I like about the threads. A person can actually have an easy conversation with someone, because the threads are right there grouped together. Blogs do not group.

I think that I do not have one main learning style. I think if I had to pick a main one it would probably be visual with independent and pragmatic close behind. I prefer to be able to see and touch the things I am learning and would rather do my work more on an independent level than with a group. I do not enjoy working in groups because there is almost always one guy that does not participate, which can drag down the process or they get a good grade without doing any work.

I think obviously a teacher would have to incorporate verbal into the teaching style since during most classes one has to speak. I also think that some independent and social learning should both be used for both groups that learn well using those styles. Both can be beneficial. Other people often add things that I may not have thought of myself and would add to my learning experience.

I agree with you. I think that blogs are more work than they are worth as well. I don't have much experience with them either. Maybe my thoughts would change if I used them more or even had a better blogging site then the one the teacher (not this course) has my other class go to. That blogging site could use some work, I think.
